We all know the infamous tale of Guy Fawkes, the poem about his treacherous plot is recited throughout the city and is known much further afield. However, over the years the nature of the festivities on the day have changed; now more commonly known as either bonfire or fireworks night, the 5th November has become a night of celebration and illumination with little to no connotations to the original meaning.

This year’s special guest emcee is none other than TV personality Gok Wan, if that’s not enough to persuade you then maybe the fact that this spectacular display gives the viewer a sparkling panoramic view of the city might. Delicious street food, a bonfire and a large German beer tent accompanied by an Oompah band will keep you warm and entertained whilst you take in the atmosphere.
Barnes Bonfire Night
For a more traditional style celebration why not opt for the Barnes Bonfire Night. The display itself usually starts at around 7.45pm, the event holds a ‘best guy’ competition in which the winner is invited to light the pyre. There will be food, mulled wine and a bar available for all attendees especially those who may need to warm up as well as a special guest DJ soundtracking the evening. It is recommended that tickets are purchased in advance.
Battersea Park Fireworks
Known for being a huge success and selling out early annually, Wandsworth Council’s yearly firework display returns this year as a two-day event. Saturday 5th November see’s the regular fireworks display and bonfire, with Sunday 6th October being more family-friendly orientated the event includes a virtual light display with less explosions for the little ones. Mulled seasonal warmers will be available and there’s a sweet stand for the kids to keep them happy too. As previously mentioned this event sells out so booking early is highly recommended.
Beckenham Fireworks
Established in 1946, the Beckenham Scouts are set to take over Croydon Road Recreation Ground for South London’s annual firework display. There are two display’s to choose from depending on your preference, the first is the more child-friendly display which takes place at 6pm and then the ‘adult’ display which takes place at 7.45pm. Fun fair rides, hot food stalls and warm drinks stands can be expected for all who may be tempted.
